Creating an FTP Account

This section outlines the steps to create an FTP account on cPanel.

Firstly, login to your cPanel account. If you are unsure on how to do this, take a look at our Logging In To cPanel guide.

Then, navigate to the Files section, and then FTP Accounts.

Now, we can create an FTP Account! Fill out the Add FTP Account section with the details below:
Log in: This will be your username. Example: VH-FTP.
Password: This will be your password. Make sure this is secure! (You can use our Password Generator)
Directory: This will be the directory you want the FTP account to be able to access. If you want the FTP account to be able to access everything, you can leave this box blank. (Note: it will default to an empty directory generated by cPanel. So check this!)
Quota: If the FTP account has its own home directory, you can assign it a quota to stop the account uploading past a specified limit. Usually, you can leave this to unlimited.

Once you've filled out the page with correct information. You can press Create FTP Account.

Once your account is created. You will see it in the FTP Accounts section below.

Please make sure you have your account details noted down from when you created your cPanel FTP Account. If you do not, then please create one now.

Now, download your favourite FTP client. In this tutorial, we are going to use FileZilla. However, some common options are listed below:

Cyberduck
WinSCP

Once you have your client ready (in this example, we are using FileZilla). You can enter in your account details!

Username: This will be the username of your FTP account you created. Example: VH-FTP@volthosting-demo.co.uk
Password: This will be the password you created when you created your FTP account.

If you are using CoreFTP or Cyberduck, you can download a premade configuration file on cPanel! Simply click on the Configure FTP Client button next to your FTP Account!

On FileZilla, you can put this into the quickconnect bar at the top of the application as shown.
