Why is the cPanel/WHM Dashboard Timing Out?
This guide covers potential causes of the cPanel or WHM dashboard timing out when attempting to access it.
Common Timeout Reasons
- Incorrect URL
- Your IP address is (temporarily) banned in the cPanel firewall
- Our cPanel servers are having issues
- External Restrictions
We will cover each of these issues and how to resolve them in this guide.
Incorrect URL
This is the most common issue relating to timeouts when accessing our cPanel services.
To access our cPanel services, you have to ensure that you are using the correct URLs.
Sometimes, your domain can have a custom cPanel subdomain, such as cpanel.yourdomain.tld, this will work in most cases if setup correctly. However, below we have a list of URLs which will always resolve to the correct place:
- cPanel: https://vh-cp02.volthosting.co.uk:2083/
- WHM: https://vh-cp02.volthosting.co.uk:2087/
- Webmail: https://vh-cp02.volthosting.co.uk:2096/
Using these three different URLs will always resolve to our cPanel02 server, where most of our customers are.
Banned IP Address
Typically your IP address will be automatically temporaily banned on the cPanel firewall if the system suspects you of being a malicous user.
This can happen for a range of reasons, such as:
- You have failed to login to cPanel multiple times
- Your email SMTP password is incorrect, and your mail client repeatidly attempts to login
- You've failed to login to webmail multiple times
- You have triggered a modsecurity rule
- Our security system detects malicous/suspicious actions from your IP address against any of our cPanel hosted websites
An easy way to test this theroy is trying to access the cPanel dashboard while on your home/office internet, and then via cellular on your phone. If one of these works, and the other doesn't, then it probably means that your IP address has been temporarily banned.
To resolve this, you can either wait until the ban has expired, or you can contact our support team to remove the ban for you. The support team can also see the reason why you were banned, and can provide steps to prevent it in the future.
Our cPanel Servers Are Having Issues
Although very unlikely, it is possible that our servers are having issues, or there is maintenance ongoing.
To check whether this is the case, you can check our status page at https://status.volthosting.co.uk/ where all maintainance and issues are listed. You can also contact us if you have any questions.
External Restrictions
These cover any issues outside of our control. It can be typical to see some of these issues in a corporate enviornment with stingent security measures in place.
Some examples include:
- Browser extensions blocking access
- Corporate firewalls (outside of our control) blocking access
- Browser issues
- Network issues
Some of these issues can be resolved by:
- Contacting your companies IT department
- Trying another browser or an incognito window
- Disable browser extensions like ad‑blockers or privacy blockers temporarily
- If you’re on a work/school network or VPN, try a normal home connection
If you contact our support, we will do our best to help resolve any of these issues. Please provide us with as much information as possible in order to assist with our assessment.
